In Memorium: Talia Joy Castellano

The topic of death is something so complex that I don't think I will ever be able to understand it. This morning I heard about the passing of Talia Joy Castellano, a 13-year-old girl who captured the attention and affection of the world with her YouTube videos. I first learned of her and her longtime battle with cancer during her appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show. She was so young yet she had more strength, maturity, and determination than most anyone I know.

She inspired me with her words and the way she would use make-up to help others feel beautiful. I will never forget the moment Ellen unveiled her honorary CoverGirl status! Her tears of happiness had me bawling for the rest of the episode.

I want to say that life isn't fair because someone like Talia should have had a chance to live to a ripe old age. Then I find myself being grateful just for having been a witness of her life. No matter her obstacles, Talia always had a beautiful smile on her face.

My prayers are with her loved ones and all her fellow cheerleaders all over the world. We all lost someone very special today, and I hope we are somehow able to keep her spirit alive. I know that her make-up tutorials will live online forever and will hopefully help another young girl battling a disease feel good about herself. I know that is what Talia would have wanted.

There are many other children just like her out there and I pray that a cure comes to them in time to save them. I would hate to think that a life as important as Talia's was lost in vain.
